Position Description: CHOP is preparing to open its first ever inpatient psychiatry program in the former Mercy Catholic Medical Center in West Philadelphia. The overall facility is a collaboration among Public Health Management Corp., Penn Medicine and CHOP. CHOP will open a crisis response center and three licensed psychiatry inpatient units for children and adolescents with a total of 46 private rooms. Therapist will provide individual, group, and family therapy using evidence-based practices and work collaboratively with a dedicated multidisciplinary team to support patients through a journey of hope and healing.

A Brief Overview Provide professional mental health treatment to both patients and their families, utilizing recognized best practice interventions, such as CBT, DBT, and behavioral and systemic family therapies. Individuals in this role will additionally provide group therapy and support the milieu interventions. These core services include assessment of psychosocial functioning and capacities, ability to complete a mental status examination, provide psychotherapeutic interventions, and work collaboratively with a comprehensive multidisciplinary team. Engaging in data driven consultation, supportive coaching, and collaborative problem solving with the full treatment team with compassion and quality care will support success of our mission! Must be able to provide supervision to developing mental health providers in the treatment of children and their families, including training and direct supervision of Fellows. Also provide clinical care to the Behavioral Health Integrated Program when appropriate on an as needed basis.
What you will do
Professional Practice Assesses, plans, implements professional interventions based upon knowledge of social work practice, human behavior and the social environment, as well as child and family development and functioning. Interventions are directed to the required by patients and their families around diagnosis, hospitalization, and any continuing care that may be required over time.
- Performs psychosocial assessment with patients and/or family.
- Intervenes/treats patient and/or family-based on the psychosocial assessment providing age and developmentally appropriate counseling, treatment and resources as indicated.
- Encourages and utilizes feedback from patients, families and other staff to improve professional services. Evaluates the effectiveness of professional services and redefines goals or modalities as indicated. Organizes individual workload and sets priorities based on patient care needs and departmental standards. Meets workload standards for assigned areas.
- Adheres to professional medical - legal reporting requirements. Seeks appropriate supervision on risk management issues.
Professional Communications
- Responsible for accurate documentation of professional services in the patient's electronic medical record. All requirements for record keeping and documentation, including billing data, are to be completed in a timely manner.
- Required documentation of assessments and interventions are well organized, clear, and timely.
- All written work is compliant and recorded properly according to hospital policy.
- Required information system data is completed and submitted according to program, department and hospital standards.
- Completes hospital, department and program requests for information within required time frames.
- Completes and submits any required reports or forms to other departments or outside agencies (as appropriate) within required time frames.

A Brief Overview Under the general supervision of the Inpatient Clinical Director, the Psychiatric Case Manager provides clinically based support to the multidisciplinary treatment team through reports of patient behavioral data as it relates to continued medical necessity for acute inpatient psychiatric care or crisis stabilization care. The Psychiatric Case Manager conducts concurrent reviews with payors as required to ensure continuous funding support for patients. The Psychiatric Case Manager maintains knowledge of the criteria of medical necessity for each level of care as well as individual payor requirements. Responsible for the overall onsite utilization review.
What you will do
- Continued stay authorization for psychiatric inpatient and crisis stabilization beds
- Provides clinical information to outside review agencies to justify extensions using continued stay criteria: Collects, analyzes, and interprets data, determining importance of information collected, forming inferences and/or forecasts on how to utilize data
- Assists clinical staff by collecting data as requested to assist in monitoring quality care
- Prepares monthly statistical reports on utilization review activities and additional narrative or statistical reports as requested
- Provides ongoing education of clinical staff regarding insurance requirements and medical record documentation
- Attends treatment team meetings and rounds to coordinate with patient's care team as needed
- Attends individual patient huddles as indicated
- Conducts case review, including documentation preparation and coordination, to determine justification for appeals in instances where payment has been denied or will potentially be denied
- Manages calls to/from insurance providers
- Using approved screening criteria, reviews and assesses appropriateness, in terms of medical necessity, of admissions and continued stay; will need to collate information from assessments done by provider/ clinical team members
- Acts as liaison between managed care company and clinician
- Reviews and assesses adequacy and appropriateness of clinical information being sent to insurance companies
- Paired with a utilization review and financial case representatives to monitor and proactively communicate financial and insurance information to patients’ treatment team to apprise them of third-party requirements that impact treatment plan and update them of current status of patients’ use of benefits in order to maximize prompt collection for services and prevent bad debt
- Works collaboratively with utilization review and finance office staff to ensure that patient services are covered by third party payer and that both the patient and treatment team are aware of any exceptions to coverage
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree Social Work, Psychology or similar field of study Required
- Master's Degree Social Work, Psychology or similar field of study Preferred
Licensure/Credentialing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have a master’s degree in social work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited program. Candidates must have at least two years post-master’s social work degree practice experience. Candidates must be able to teach courses across the social work curriculum at both the MSW and BSW level, although principal assignment will be to the master’s program. Must be willing to teach in face-to-face and online/blended platforms, during the day and evening, and if necessary, interdisciplinary courses.
Candidates must demonstrate ongoing professional development as teachers, scholars, and practitioners through activities that support the program’s missions and goals. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to advising and student engagement to support academic success.

Special consideration given to qualified candidates who reflect minoritized populations. Interest in teaching macro and research courses a plus.
DUTIES:
The selected candidate will serve as an instructor in the MSW program, teaching courses across the curriculum at the micro, mezzo, and macro level. The teaching load is 12 credits each fall and spring semester, in a combination of face-to-face and blended/online formats carried out in day and evening schedules. Summer teaching may be expected. The candidate will participate in activities serving the department, such as student advising, and contributing to departmental decisions and program development. The candidate will also be expected to engage in scholarship endeavors and participate in activities serving the university and community.
