Session Description:

Culturally attuned care is not optional—it is an ethical mandate. This presentation challenges clinicians to move beyond performative cultural competence toward authentic cultural attunement: the ability to be emotionally, intellectually, and behaviorally
responsive to the lived experiences of diverse clients. Grounded in social work ethics and human rights principles, the session examines how power, privilege, and systemic inequities shape the therapeutic process. Through case analysis and discussion, participants
will explore how ethical codes call us to honor culture as context, not just category.
Attendees will leave equipped with practical tools to engage in self-reflection, mitigate bias, and foster equity-driven therapeutic alliances. The goal is simple yet profound: to ensure that every client receives care that is both clinically sound and culturally sacred.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Differentiate between cultural competence, humility, and attunement as frameworks for ethical clinical practice.
2. Analyze the ethical obligations outlined in the NASW Code of Ethics and the ABCSW Standards related to cultural responsiveness.
3. Apply strategies to address implicit bias and cultural dissonance in clinical decision-making.
4. Develop actionable approaches to embed cultural attunement within assessment, treatment planning, and supervision.

Speaker Information

Dr. Josalin J. Hunter, LCSW, MSW, MPH

Dr. Josalin Hunter is a social worker and public health professional practicing as a licensed clinical therapist and NC-registered clinical supervisor. She also serves as tenured part-time faculty at UNC-Wilmington. In her work as a therapist and educator, she has spent her career walking alongside individuals and families facing mental illness - to include anxiety and severe depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. She has herself been impacted by adverse events and has also supported loved ones dealing with mental health challenges, which has given her a deeply personal understanding of the courage, resilience, and support needed to thrive.
Josalin joined the NAMI NC Board of Directors to be part of a leadership team that advances mental health awareness, reduces stigma, and expands access to equitable, high-quality care across North Carolina. She desires to help shape strategic initiatives and community programs, as well as to grow as a leader, broaden her advocacy impact, and help ensure that NAMI NC continues to be a trusted, inclusive resource for individuals and families affected by mental illness.
Josalin holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Master of Social Work from University of Missouri-Saint Louis, a Master of Public Health from Emory University, and a Ph.D. in Health Promotion and Behavior from the University of Georgia.

Continuing Education
The American Board of Clinical Social Work (ABCSW), #1854, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 8/23/2024 – 8/23/2027. Social workers participating in this virtual learning session will receive up to 1 continuing education credit.

Continuing Education Certificate Requirements
Registered event attendees must fully attend the chosen session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credits/Hours. Session evaluations include attendance attestation statements and must be completed within the same day as the attended session to be considered valid. To receive a Continuing Education Certificate, you must complete the attestation statement of the session attended which is located in the session evaluation survey. The link to complete the overall conference survey will be emailed to all attendees after closing remarks. Continuing Education Certificates will be electronically sent by the third Friday of the Speaker Series Session month, via the email provided in your evaluation.
