Session Description:
Moral injury, defined as the psychological distress caused by violating one's ethical code, poses a significant threat to the well-being of social workers and the quality of services offered. The presentation will outline how social workers can experience and the symptoms of moral injury. The impact of this phenomenon will be explored, highlighting individual and organizational consequences. Lastly, the presentation will emphasize the importance of awareness, support, and advocacy as key to reduce the risk of moral injury and ensuring the wellbeing of helping professionals and the communities they serve.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Define moral injury specifically as it relates to social work;
2. Describe the difference between burnout & moral injury;
3. Recall examples of moral injury;
4. Identify the symptoms of moral injury in the workplace;
5. Describe ways to reduce risk and occurrences of moral injury; and
6. Identify strategies to heal systemically at various professional levels.

Speaker Information

Maryam Abdallah, LCSW

Maryam’s passion rests in helping, encouraging, and empowering individuals. Her life’s mantra comes from the words of Oprah Winfrey, “When we know better, we do better.” As a therapist, consultant, and adjunct professor her goal is to share the tools and resources needed to help individuals reach their fullest potential. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Master of Social Work degree both from Tennessee State University.
Maryam is a licensed clinical social worker with 20+ years of experience, advocacy, and leadership in the field of social work. Her knowledge of the legal system and social work together create a forensic lens into the human perspective, which combined are ideal in working to empower individuals. She has a wealth of expertise in leadership, program development and implementation with specialties that include child and family perspectives, trauma-informed approach, restorative justice and healing, anti-oppressive practices, forensic interviewing, and adult mental health wellness. Maryam is currently an adjunct professor at both the University of Tennessee Knoxville College of Social Work and Belmont University School of Social Work.
Maryam’s core therapy practice includes a focus on individuals, couples and families utilizing dialectical behavior, empowerment, and trauma informed therapies. She also specializes in the empowerment of Women and the LGBTQ Community through narrative therapy. As the founder and CEO of I Am Well Consulting, LLC a boutique group therapy practice, Maryam provides compassionate and evidence-based therapy, empowers workplaces to prioritize employee well-being, and actively engages in community outreach to destigmatize mental health and promote accessible support.

Continuing Education
The American Board of Clinical Social Work (ABCSW), #1854, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 8/23/2024 – 8/23/2027. Social workers participating in this virtual learning session will receive up to 1 continuing education credit.

Continuing Education Certificate Requirements
Registered event attendees must fully attend the chosen session to be eligible for Continuing Education Credits/Hours. Session evaluations include attendance attestation statements and must be completed within the same day as the attended session to be considered valid. To receive a Continuing Education Certificate, you must complete the attestation statement of the session attended which is located in the session evaluation survey. The link to complete the overall conference survey will be emailed to all attendees after closing remarks. Continuing Education Certificates will be electronically sent by the third Friday of the Speaker Series Session month, via the email provided in your evaluation.
